In Plato’s myth, the demiurge is a divine craftsman who uses eternal ideas as perfect blueprints to shape the material world. But in the act of creation, the pure forms are inevitably corrupted by imperfect materials.

At the center of a darkened room stands a seven-foot-high resonator. It is a unique sculpture crafted from clay, bamboo roots, and metal, with articulating, panel-like arms. A soft, glowing light emanates from its core. When you sit in the chair, you become the new center of this light, and your body casts strange, organic shadows across the space.

This simple act of entering and sharing the space alters the experience for every person present. The installation suggests that a shared reality is formed in these brief interactions, where we perceive each other—and all of nature—as small yet crucial parts of a whole.

About the Artist

Kate Mueller is a designer and environmental installation artist who combines welding and woodworking techniques to create large-scale designs that evoke the feeling of being from another astral plane. She applies a variety of unconventional techniques and materials to her work, including found objects, glass, mirrors, and reclaimed building materials. Her self-taught method consists of a meticulous physical process of cutting, joining, and welding negative and positive forms together, resulting in monumental and often functional sculptures that are ethereal and thought-provoking. 

Her work explores themes of shared humanity, the interconnectedness of all things, consciousness, and the power of questioning the status quo. Mueller has created site-specific, interactive installations in Santa Monica, Downtown LA, and Ventura County. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
